  1. I think Xgau was making the point a few years ago how contrary to lamentations ab fragmentation the interweb (or something) seemed to be affecting more overlap, convergence, betw music gatekeepers (RS, PItchfork, NPR, etc). Continues to sound ab right to me. I know nearly all these artists, if via different songs, even though I've gathered we build our playlists from different sources. At any rate, I remain astonished by the sheer volume of the good stuff. I know we could get into how pop music or __________ feels like a painfully inadequate response to the general fuckedness of Trumpdom. True enough. But it's still one my two or three favorite ways to waste my time; behind reading, perhaps, but ahead of movies and TV. The physical whole-body immediacy of it, like slapstick, is key for me, I think; hooks, dance moves, jokes and all that melodic/dissonant emotionalism and personality vibrating inside you. Take "Mask Off." That song is so alien to nearly anything in my own personal experience and yet it feels to me like some essential part of 2017. I know that depends partly on my own projections but the intersection is more than half the buzz of my favorite songs. I'll track down "Gods" and "Rock'n Latex" for sure. Thanks.
